equal to half the population of oakland. it's being called an eyesore and health hazard and san jose says it needs to go. a homeless encampment has grown in the last few weeks on land under the flight path to mineta international airport. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec shows us the condition at the tent city. >> reporter: it's cold to be camping but the people behind mere along spring street say they have no other choice but to live in this shantytown. police are planning a clean-up though so they are going to have to find somewhere else to live as soon as march 4. this encampment near guadalupe river park has gotten so big, you can see it from the airplanes. 100 people living in 40 tents. the squatters started coming here last month after the city raided a nearby encampment and the setup they are living in are elaborate some with windowpanes and makeshift kitchens. >> reporter: is this a mattress?

gonzalez managed to tackle and detain one of the suspects until police arrived although the other got away making off with several items. some other bay area headlines on this thursday. a new lawsuit filed after a north bay school fired its head football coach in connection with a sexual hazing incident. st. patrick saint vincent in vallejo fired their head coach chris cerbone and four other coaches last month. the school expelled five varsity players after a hazing incident in the locker room was reported to the coaches. lawyers say it was a wrongful termination. a fairfield man returns to court this morning to be arraigned on murder charges with special circumstances that could lead to the death penalty. 32-year-old anthony lamar jones is accused of killing 13-year- old genelle conway allen. her body was found in a park february 1. jones was arrested a week later. police think he acted alone. the obama administration may ask the supreme court to overturn california's proposition 8. that's the voter- approved initiative that limits

say they are going to have to clear out. san jose officials will clear a tent city that sprung up on land south of mineta international airport. anne makovec smack in san jose this morning and the camp is just getting plenty of complaints. >> reporter: yes, but for people living here this is seen as a relatively nice shantytown here along spring street. you can see some of its residents starting to wake up this morning at 6:30 a.m. police are planning to raid this encampment as soon as march four. people flying over it have complained. there are about 100 people living in approximately 40 tents. plenty of them arrived last month after a nearby encampment was shut down. neighbors say this is dangerous and unsanitary. you move them and they pop up in another spot.

the damage that it left behind there. two people inside that car died. las vegas boulevard is shut down now from caesar's palace to paris a long stretch on that las vegas boulevard. but we are keeping an eye on this. we'll give you information. three people are dead right in the middle of the strip in front of bally's there. so we'll get more information. we'll pass it along. >> 4-year-old girl is being praised for pulling her 2-year- old sister from the wreckage of a car crash that killed their mother. troopers believe 26-year-old jessica fell asleep at the wheel tuesday night veered off the highway and slammed head on to a tree in washington state. the girls huddled under a blanketed for hours until a passerby stopped after seeing them. the 2-year-old was severely injured but is alive in the hospital. the 4-year-old was released.

have seen quite a beginning to the season but now things have started to taper off. outside now, it is a quiet beginning to the day. we have some partly cloudy skies. it looks like a nice day ahead. it will be a dry one. it's going to be breezy as you approach the coastline. plenty of afternoon sunshine. and then looks like dry weather will continue in place not only for today but probably right into the weekend, as well. the ridge of high pressure is lifting the jet stream far enough north to keep us dry. snow in the tahoe area. this morning seeing some of that. but not here. it's going to stay cooler than average. temperatures a few degrees below average by this afternoon. no delays at sfo just a few clouds moving on by. across the country a different story. thunderstorms in houston could cause problems. snow in denver and more of the snow into the chicago area. 41 and partly cloudy in new york. around the bay temperatures in the 50s and 60s, usually the

mid-60s in the warmer spots this time of year so cooler than average but not bad. 50s tow coastline and breezy. 50s and low 60s into the east bay. and it will be breezy into san francisco at 58. is 55 daly city, 51 santa rosa. next couple of days a few clouds, dry, lots of sunshine, maybe a weak offshore wind over the weekend. and looks like it will stay dry well into next week elizabeth. >> hopefully we'll keep traffic quiet for the morning commute. an accident in livermore again in the commute direction approaching north first street so our drive time is now in that heavy category. 35 minutes between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. also, we have some chain requirements traveling towards the sierra, maybe getting a head start on the weekend we'll get to that in just a minute. in the meantime westbound 80 approaching cherry glen in vacaville there is an accident

between a maserati and an suv outside the bally's casino. the maserati hit a taxi and that taxi caught fire killing two people inside and the driver of the maserati. at least three other people were injured. and police are still looking for the suv involved in the shooting. but again, three people dead. no decision on bail for the south african olympian charged with murder. we are waiting for a live press conference in south africa. oscar pistorius is expected to be back in court tomorrow. he is charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend. lawyers for pistorius are trying to get his charges downgraded and get the lead detective replaced. new details show the detective faces attempted murder charges in an unrelated shooting now. major league baseball has reportedly given the oakland as tentative guidelines for a move to downtown san jose. this comes from the los angeles times. the story doesn't mention any specific guidelines. but it appears they do not
